The Story of Beacon Mountain Homes

Named after the famed Brecon Beacon Mountain range in South Wales, Welsh couple Dorian and Hayley Medlicott first began building in the UK – offices, health facilities, commercial stores, industrial units and hundreds of houses - winning national and regional awards in the process.

Eventually they moved to western Canada, craving opportunity and wide open spaces. Their work soon became recognized, particularly of note are the prestigious school house and spa at the exclusive 901 Fernie, and the Loaf Bakery.
But as they say, home is where the heart is and the Medlicott’s love of home and family saw Beacon’s focus turning to more and more home building projects – both custom and spec homes.

At the core of their philosophy and success is detailed planning and cost management. The Beacon planning process employs a sophisticated cost estimating system to calculate the best, fixed price possible for the client.

A Love for the Build
Dorian’s passion for homebuilding is matched only by his love of family and rugby. Inspired by his mother who has served as a health care professional in Wales for more than 45 years, Dorian says it’s helping people achieve their dreams that drives him to build beautiful mountain homes – on time and on budget. A slave to the plan and executing with a precise schedule and appreciation for his clients’ pocketbooks, Dorian has become known for his homes and commercial projects throughout the Bow Valley, stretching from Canmore to Fernie. When not building homes, Dorian can be found with his wife Hayley and their two children on the soccer field, around a dinner table, or drinking beer and eating a nice ham roll with his family in Wales.

An Eye to Refinement
Hayley knows her way around a kitchen, and that kitchen knowledge has saved several Beacon Homes clients’ from making some big mistakes. While Dorian oversees the big picture process of home builds, Hayley is working in the background to ensure the design is not only beautiful, it’s perfectly functional. In fact, her favourite part of the job is problem solving design dilemmas over multiple cups of tea in the early morning hours. She’ll noodle the problem until it’s solved and the clients are content. Then Hayley happily unwinds by putting on some Dolly Parton and singing along during epic dinner prep dance parties. More than anything, Hayley loves to be with Dorian and their two children, whether they are paddle boarding, skiing, biking or breaking bread with the extended family from Wales that visit the Canadian Rockies frequently.
The Beacon brand is a Celtic Knot symbolizing love. And working with Beacon means you feel loved. It’s like being pulled into a cozy Welsh CWTCH, a very special kind of cuddle.
